Mobile Fishing Gear Effects on Benthic Habitats: A Bibliography

چکیده
Effects of trawling on Posidonia oceanica beds. Posid onia beds between Capo Circeo and Terracina (Mid-Tyrrhenian Sea) were studied as part of a study of the effects of illegal trawling inside th e three m ile limit. M ore than a hund red station s, placed along tran sects orthogonal to the shore, were considered. The results obtained show great damage to the Posid onia beds: red uction in mean d ensity (leaf sh oot/m ) to less than 50 in most of the area observed, regression of lower borders and w ide areas of dead beds. A quantitative analysis of fishing impacts on shelf-sea benthos.
1. The effects of towed bottom-fishing gear on benthic communities is the subject of heated debate, but the generality of trawl effects with respect to gear and habitat types is poorly understood. To address this deficiency we undertook a meta-analysis of 39 published fishing impact studies. 2. Our analysis shows that inter-tidal dredging and scallop dredging have the greatest initial effects o...
متن کاملMobile Fishing Gear Effects on Benthic Habitats: A Bibliography (Second Edition)
This document reviews the results of a workshop on scallop biology and the effects of scallop dredging on benthic communities. The workshop was held in Kodiak, Alaska, during 10-12 June 1999. A review of the history of the Alaskan weathervane scallop fishery was presented. Other speakers presented papers on scallop biology and fisheries in other cold-water areas. Topics of the papers included p...

Fishing constitutes one of the most significant threats to marine biodiversity and ecosystem function, documented by a growing body of information on the numerous impacts to populations, community structure, and habitats (Dayton et al., 1995; Roberts, 1995; Jennings and Polunin, 1996). Besides the more obvious effects on species population structure, fishing activities may also reduce the struc...
متن کاملDisturbance of the Marine Benthic Habitat by Commercial Fishing: Impacts at the Scale of the Fishery
Commercial fishing is one of the most important human impacts on the marine benthic environment. One such impact is through disturbance to benthic habitats as fishing gear (trawls and dredges) are dragged across the seafloor. While the direct effects of such an impact on benthic communities appear obvious, the magnitude of the effects has been very difficult to evaluate. Experimental fishing-di...
متن کاملSimilar effects of bottom trawling and natural disturbance on composition and function of benthic communities across habitats
Bottom trawl fishing has widespread impacts on benthic habitats and communities. The benthic response to trawling seems to be smaller or absent in areas exposed to high natural disturbance, leading to the hypothesis that natural and trawl disturbance affect benthic communities in a similar way. However, systematic tests of this hypothesis at large spatial scales and with data from sites spannin...
